Evolution
Essay by Tsveta Manolevska
Million years ago… Water… Horizon… And nothing else. Nothing which can actually be seen. Because there, over the horizon, flourishing in the water, was something incredible, amazing, great…Billions of tiny unseen unicellular organisms, which originated the vital spark – universe’s most perfect creation.
Since then, these microscopic beings had been developing every single minute, day, year, and century. Eventually becoming sizeable, variegated, even sensible. For many years these species have been living, unmolested, drawing no attention to anybody. But one person – Charles Darwin, couldn’t ignore the fact that there were thousands of creatures all over the world and we, the human beings, the ones who are gifted with intelligence, just live without noticing these animals, without understanding that they are an important part of our world.
And so, the naturalist’s challenge began. He assumed the responsibility for studying, investigating and describing all the species in the world – mammals, birds, reptiles; elephants, tigers, dolphins, swallows… and hundreds, thousands, millions of others. This is how Darwin’s famous work – “On the Origin of Species” – appeared. In conjunction with it came Darwin’s assertion about evolution – for the first time in human history someone tried to explain the meaning of life and the way it developed. Darwin proved that no creature looked the same as it did thousands of years ago – they had all changed, they had evolved, and so had we. It was an enormous, colossal change. Caves, raw meat, animal instincts... Many years of developing, greatness and disgrace, until we find ourselves in the 21st century – the technological era, the time of skyscrapers, planes, artificial intellect… And although we are living through our greatest time as a civilization, as a result of evolution, we can not forget the source, the ancestors, the affect and power of Mother Nature – we can not forget Evolution. Because, the only way this great process can continue is to keep the balance between us and the environment.
Today, 2009 – 200 years after the accomplished naturalist Darwin was born and 150 years since his work came to the world, we, modern people, humans who were very much a part of this evolution must remember his discoveries and try not to interfere with evolution’s work. There is nothing else left for us, except to bow down before nature and to further develop Darwin’s impact.
